In a significant boost to academic and research activity at University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG), the institution’s Chemistry Division has officially launched a series of research papers, marking a new milestone in its commitment to advancing scholarly output and disseminating knowledge across Papua New Guinea.
According to reports in The National, UPNG’s division has moved to publish and share its latest research papers after months of preparation and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders. The move reflects UPNG’s growing emphasis on quality research as a driver for national development, policy change and education innovation.
Key Highlights
- The newly launched papers cover a range of topics that align with national priorities, including governance, socio-economic development, education, environment and regional cooperation.
- UPNG leadership emphasized the importance of sharing research outcomes not just within academia but with government agencies, communities and the private sector — thereby reinforcing the university’s role as a knowledge hub.
- The initiative is expected to raise UPNG’s research profile and provide its academic staff and students with stronger platforms for publication, citation and engagement with policy-makers.
Strategic Importance for PNG
Since its establishment, UPNG has been central to Papua New Guinea’s higher education and research landscape. By launching these papers, the university reinforces its mission to inform and influence national development. With PNG facing complex challenges such as climate change, infrastructure gaps, and governance reform, university-led research becomes even more vital.
Moreover, UPNG’s move aligns with global trends in higher education where universities are expected to produce impactful research — not just for academic prestige but for tangible social and economic benefit. This initiative could pave the way for further collaborations, research funding, and partnerships with regional and international institutions.
Looking Ahead
UPNG’s division will likely follow up this launch with dissemination activities such as seminars, workshops and community outreach sessions, where research findings can be translated into practical recommendations. It is also hoped that more of UPNG’s departments will adopt similar publication strategies to build a robust research culture across the institution.
As UPNG strengthens its research capacity, the university is poised to contribute more substantially to Papua New Guinea’s national discourse — helping to shape policy, inform public debate and support sustainable development.
Hi,
I was surprised not to find a link to the website mentioned in this article.
Please provide me with the UPNG Division of Chemistry website address.
Thank you.
Hi Michael, this article was sourced from the Post Courier. I will try to contact the University and ask for the link.
Hi Ben,
Did you find the link to the website?
UPNG Chemistry website is current only on the intranet. This means that it can only be accessed by those within the school. However, the head of the Chemistry Department, Dr. Marasinghe assures us that it will be put online soon. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the site URL but I’m sure that information will be made public once the site is accessible externally.
If you have further queries then please contact the university on (+675) 326 0900.
