The Papua New Guinea (PNG) Customs Commissioner, Gary Juffa, is planning to establish a Customs Academy, The National has reported.
A milestone Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last week in Madang between the Commissioner and Divine Word University (DWU) President, Fr. Jan Czuba, paves the path to facilitate training of Customs officers.
The previous training program was to send Customs officer to Australia for hands-on experience which was an expensive exercise. The Customs Commissioner said that on-shore training with DWU would cut down costs.
Initial training in management would begin later this month while training in other specific areas would start next year. The core of this training would be ethics – a key component in all subject taught in DWU.
The training while targeting PNG was open to other Pacific Island nations facing similar challenges as us, say Juffa.
