Students at the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby’s Waigani campus yesterday met prospective employers to discuss career pathways.
Speaking at a careers fair organized by the university’s Open Day Committee, public relations and marketing coordinator Kairu Laho said the event was a way to partner in a practical manner with potential employers in making students aware of career opportunities and prepare them for the workforce.
She said the purpose of the day event was to bridge the gap between the university and employer and to get students to interact with companies and businesses so they had an understanding of what employers expected.
Final year political science student Newman Kaupa described it as a great opportunity. He said such an event made it easier for him as potential employers came to their campus.
Vele Nalu and Daniel Petrus, both final year science students, said the information and recruitment programmes that Information Technology companies and the Mineral Resources Authority (MRA) was good as it allowed them to talk to them about employment prospects in their fields of study under the science discipline.
A public relations officer said the fair should be staged annually.
Nambawan Super Ltd, NasFund Ltd, MRA, Eda Super Ltd, Bank of PNG, Department of Mineral Policy and Geohazards management, Nestle PNG, Steamships and Kina group of companies took part in the careers fair.
