Secondary school gets new kitchen

A secondary school outside Goroka town in Eastern Highlands will no longer have to use a makeshift mess and kitchen.

It follows a pledge by the Bank South Pacific Goroka branch to build a proper and permanent kitchen and dining area.

Students at the school, about 10km outside Goroka, are excited about the prospect of no longer having to cook on open flames on the bare earth and having a proper facility to dine in.

Established in 2009, the school was registered as a distance education learning center, accommodating students who did not have the opportunity to further their education after high school.

In 2011, the school’s curriculum changed when its board realized a rise in demand and decided to upgrade it to become a secondary school under the National Education Board.

Principal Orege Asaro welcomed BSP’s support and said the new facilities would encourage students to enroll as boarders.

Bank branch manager Reuben Elijah said BSP was pleased to lend a hand as part of its social responsibility to invest into communities the bank operated in.

He urged the students to look after the facility and make use of the opportunity to get an education.

Elijah and his staff will be involved in the project, including landscaping around the mess area.
The project should be completed by April.
