More than 200 students at the Pausa St Paul’s Lutheran Secondary School in Enga have been sent home and parents are calling on the government to intervene.
Wapenamanda local level government council president Nick Andake said four classes of Grade 9 students were sent home for two weeks because they had no classrooms and dormitories.
He said it was one of the oldest in the province but was now in dire need of infrastructure.
Andake said the school was declared a secondary school in 2006 and graduated its first Grade 12 in 2007 but still lacked proper infrastructure.
He said the Enga government had not considered helping the school with improved infrastructure and learning materials and had gone ahead to build a new high school in Tsak and declared a Four Square secondary school, all in the same district.
He said opening up schools was good but it would be better if the provincial government improved the existing facilities at schools before opening new ones.
Andake said the students were sent home while waiting for the school management to build bush material classrooms and dormitories.
He called on Enga Governor Peter Ipatas and his foundation not to use the media as a political propaganda as there “is a lot more to be done in the education than the uniforms and the school trucks”.
He said K8 million was paid to his Ireyalia landowner for the new hospital while more money was paid to the teachers’ college in his village while the students were suffering without infrastructure.
“We have to complete one project before going to another project. I call on the Governor to use the Ipatas Foundation, the future Enga children funds for the benefit of the children like building better infrastructure and buying new learning and teaching materials than uniforms and trucks,” Andake said.
“I’m now appealing to the national government and the department of education to bail the school out of the situation with financial assistance to build school infrastructure,” he said.
