Many students were on board mv Rabaul Queen when it sank off the coast of Morobe yesterday. Reports in the Post Courier state that these students were going back to their respective schools for commencement of classes next week. The ill feted ferry belonged to Rabaul Shipping.

Concerned parents and relatives who fronted the transport company’s office in Rabaul said that they have not received any news of their loved ones.  The company’s legal officer, Jacklyn Marubu, said they could not provide any concrete information but are in the process of compiling a passenger manifest.

Rabaul Shipping Managing Director Peter Sharp has declined to talk to the media.

Meanwhile, authorities have described the incident as the worst maritime disaster in the country.
