Port Moresby Cricket Association and its major sponsor International Training Institution have introduced scholarships for its cricketers.
The scholarship which will be sponsored by ITI will see five players chosen from the eight clubs registered with the association.
The clubs are PMMI Coasters, Chili Sounds Raukele, Badili Hardware Wanderers (formerly Steamies), Kira Kira Cricket Club (KCC) BNG Poreporena, United and Kempa.
The clubs have teams competing in the juniors, premier, A, B, U19, U16 and women’s divisions.
Managing director Kumaran Sentheyval said on Monday during the sponsorship announcement that ITI recommitting itself to the association with a K25, 000 was a boost for the 2012-13 seasons.
Sentheyval said it was POMCA’s responsibility to choose the players based on selection criteria the board would have to set.
He said the male and female cricketers could choose which courses they wanted to study and would start their courses in June.
“We are here for the long term and our aim is to work with association and build it up from the ground level. And we believe the introduction of scholarships is something we all are looking forward to and the scholarship holders can aim high for,” he said.
He said they would also be assisting POMCA run short management courses.
“Basically the courses will be on how to manage clubs,” he said.
POMCA chairman John Vada thanked ITI for the initiative.
He said volunteers had dedicated their time to POMCA would also be benefitting from the short courses.
