One of the country’s oldest national high schools, Kerevat National High School in East New Britain, resumed classes today. The school had been closed in 2010 due to the deteriorating state of school facilities which posed a health concerns. The school was declared open last Friday by Deputy Education Secretary, Damien Rapese.
He also said the school would have been opened on the 12thof March; however, delay in funding pushed the opening date. He also presented a cheque for K10 million to the school to speed up renovation work, projects and other administration work.
He said part of the blame for the schools closure should be on the Department of Education. According to reports in The National, he said that the department should be blamed for not giving “enough funding and support.” However, he also said the management should be blamed for the school’s poor facilities.
The school has new management with 14 staff headed by the Principal, Mr. Ray Rieme Alo. The classes will resume with 120 students making up 2 classes each in the social science and science fields.
All renovation and project work is expected to be completed by June.
