Unitech’s sacked VC, Dr. Albert Schram.

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Technology (Unitech) in Lae has been sacked by the university council.

Dr. Albert Schram who was appointed earlier this year after former VC, Dr. Misty Baloiloi, resigned to contest in the coming general elections has been sacked after only a couple of months in the position.

According to reports in The National, Dr. Schram was sacked “because he wanted to decommission a Masters Program in Electrical Engineering, downsize the council from 25 to 12 and reduce programs in each department.” However, Post Courier’s The Drum column believes that Schram may have discovered major problems in the administration.

Meanwhile, students and staff have protested against the sacking, giving a 48 hour ultimatum to Chancellor Philip Stagg, Registrar Allan Sako and members of the council to reverse the decision.

Over 3000 students boycotted classes and marched to the administration building demanding an explanation to the sacking. They also called for an investigation into all the university administration accounts.

  1. Prof. Dr. Ram Bilas Misra, Professor of Maths., School of Natural Sciences, Adama Science & Technology University, Adama (Ethiopia) says:

    TO ALL UNITECH STAFF:

Though I am no more a faculty member of the Unitech but since I have recd. this long saga (which, of course, is sad) I comment as follows:

    1. Till the junior staff members continue to interview their own Head of Dept. and make him/her just a puppet to their ill-motives, discipline cannot prevail in the University.

    2. While approving renewal of contract of his/her junior colleagues, the Head of the Department should not be obliged to reveal his recommendation to the incumbent.

    3. For best interests of the University no teaching staff should be given more than 2 contracts (of total period of service: six years). I have personally noticed the monopoly of handful of teachers / office staff and have been victimized too by them only.

    4. Registrars, Assistant Registrars should be rotated/transferred amongst the Universities in the country. Many countries follow this system in order to avoid building deep roots of such (politically) motivated personnels.

    5. I do not agree with the comments given by Professor Telue. If he himself finds a true and dedicated teacher of the University he should quit all the non-teaching jobs and should confine to his teaching duties only. It should not be a monopoly of anyone to continue on such non-teaching assignments/ or ex-officio Chairman / Member of various academic / administrative positions for more than one term of maximum 2 years.
