A former Professor at the University of Technology in Lae has spoken out against the recent sacking of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and issues within the university.

Dr. Ram Bilas Misra, a former Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, in a comment on one of our stories [read here], stated that junior staff were using their Head of Departments (HoD) as puppets for their ill motives.

He stated that HoDs should not be obliged to reveal their recommendations while approving a contract. He also said that a contract should not be given for more than two terms (6 years). He claims this has created a monopoly of teachers who have victimized other staff and teachers.

He also recommended that assistant registrars and registrars should be rotated amongst the universities. He said this was a common practice in many countries that deterred the establishment of political roots.

Finally he expressed disagreement with the comments of Dr. Telue saying that,

If he himself finds a true and dedicated teacher of the University he should quit all the non-teaching jobs and should confine to his teaching duties only.

Dr. Misra further stated that it should not be a monopoly for someone to continue on such non-teaching assignments for more than two years.

Dr. Misra is currently a Professor of Mathematics in the School of Natural Sciences in Adama Science & Technology University in Ethiopia.
