The United States government wants to link up the University of Natural Resource and Environment (UNRE) to universities in the United States (US) in fields of similar interest.
Deputy Chief of mission at the US embassy in Port Moresby Bryan David Hunt visited the UNRE Vudal campus and said it was doing a great job in educating the next generation of leaders on natural resources economy.
“There is no question that even with the exploitation of the country’s mineral resources, most people would continue to rely on agriculture,” he said.
Hunt said they were looking at ways to connect the UNRE with universities in US in the field of natural resources.
He said climate change was another area which the UNRE could link with academic institutions in the US for research and joint projects.
Hunt said the focus of the “US new ideas on climate change” was the adaptation to climate change in Papua New Guinea and the region.
“One of the areas in the new ideas is to link with academic institutions within the region on climate change,” he said.
UNRE’s vice-chancellor Prof Philip Siaguru said the university would be offering new courses in geo-hazard management and would possibly need assistance.
“As far as the university is concerned, non-renewable natural resources were temporary,” Siaguru said.
He said money generated from these resources should be put back into the economy.
The university has spent close to K23 million on the Vudal campus.
