Student refused bid to run for elections

A grade 12 student at the Hagen Park Secondary School was refused by election officials when he attempted to nominate for the Hagen Open seat. According to The National, the student surprised officials when he turned up at the electoral office and requested to contest the general elections.

Election manager, Philip Telape said the student was refused because he was underage and did not satisfy the requirements.

Meanwhile, a law student from the University of Papua New Guinea has pulled out of classes to contest the national elections. Waim-Iner Elvis Thoke will be contesting the Enga regional seat against Governor Peter Ipatas.

He is one of 18 candidates vying for the seat. He is an independent candidate and was nominated with the support of his fellow students.
