Exams for students at the University of Papua New Guinea have been moved to next week following their request.

They wanted their study break extended by a week because of the frequent power cuts in the area.

Student representative council president Emanuel Isaac said the blackout was caused by a 40-year-old electricity cable that could not supply electricity consistently.

Pro-vice chancellor Prof Kenneth Sumbuk confirmed the power supply problem.

PNG Power has been working on removing the 300m faulty and aging cables.

On Saturday night, angry students vandalized university properties and stole food from its stores.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Ross Hynes said he had sent out circulars on the new examination timetable.

A committee met yesterday and decided that as a temporary measure, electricity would be supplied from a generator from 6am to 6pm.
