The University of Papua New Guinea students’ representative council has condemned the actions of students who damaged facilities last Saturday.

The students are scheduled to sit for their examinations yesterday.

On Saturday, some students broke the glass windows of the university bookshop, the Uni Venture building which housed the administration and registry and the library and smashed the glass door of the book shop.

A laptop and desktop belonging to the periodical library section was stolen.

Food in the university’s cafeteria was also ransacked. Cereals and cabbages at the mess were stolen.
The students blocked off the main entrance opposite the girls’ dormitory with tree branches.

Council president Emanuel Isaac said he condemned the actions of the students but said the students and administration should be blamed.

“There will be no exams for students tomorrow, because of what has happened,’’ he said. The damages done are so immense.

“As a leader I feel we are all equally responsible. The administration is responsible because the students last week conducted a sitting protest for the administration to delay the examination due to constant blackouts.”

“The university since then has not responded.”

“Last night (Saturday), when the lights went off at 10pm, the students became frustrated and started looting and vandalizing.”

“We could not identify the students because of the blackout but admit that vandalism was caused by the students.”

“The matter became worse when the students alleged that one student died because of study pressure and another got injured while trying to move his stuff to 3-Mile to do his studies.”
