KOKOPO – Over 30 female teaching students in East New Britain (ENB) have been awarded their Mathematics and Science scholarships last Friday under the Boosting Education Standards Together (BEST) PNG project, Post Courier reports.

A total of 33 scholarships were awarded with the St. Peter’s Chanel College of Teacher Education (SPCCC) receiving 31 and 2 recipients from the Pacific Adventist University (PAU) in Central Province.

The award letters were handed out in a ceremony last Friday and witnessed by Save the Children PNG Country Director, Fiu Williame-Igara, National Department of Education (NDoE) secretary, Dr Uke Kombra, ENB Provincial Education Advisor, Alkan Mararang, and representatives from the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST).

The program was initially launched early this year and can support up to a total of 40 female students studying for a Bachelors Degree in Secondary Education with specialization in Science or Mathematics.

The program targets students from one of the under served target provinces; Western, Milne Bay, Gulf, Oro, West Sepik and West New Britain (WNB).

At the moment, only female students enrolled in the first year at St. Peter’s or PAU can apply for the scholarships.
