Discussions between The University of the South Pacific (USP) and the Government of Japan could see more USP students benefiting from the JENESYS cultural exchange and student exchange collaboration.
The Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassy of Japan, Mr Kenichiro Tanaka was received by USP’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Regional Campuses and Global Engagement), Dr Giulio Masasso Tui’ikologahau Paunga who briefed the Counsellor on the progress of the University and commitments to ensuring cultural exchange and student exchange collaboration in the Pacific region.
Mr Tanaka was impressed and delighted on his first visit to USP. He shared his hearty condolences to the people of Tonga that were affected by the volcanic eruptions and assured them about the support and emergency assistance that was provided by the Government of Japan. Mr Tanaka also mentioned that the JENESYS project “People to People exchange” shall continue to strengthen the relationship bond between Japan and Pacific Islands Countries.
Due to COVID 19, the physical exchange was not foreseeable, however, the virtual programme has seen students growing an interest in Japan and we hope that border restrictions are eased so that students can explore and experience Japan.
Mr Tanaka
Dr Paunga thanked Mr Tanaka and the Government of Japan for their deep condolences and assistance during the hard times faced by Tonga. He also mentioned that JENESYS project had provided excellent opportunities to Pacific youth, and USP was hopeful for their continuous support from the Government of Japan and the continuation of the exchange collaborations.
