Schools in Madang’s Naiyudo in Raicoast have closed down for the year, an official says
Acting provincial education director John Ura said about five (5) primary schools had shutdown in fear of the Hetwara gang and teachers had all moved to other schools in Raicoast.
We have Gorawang, Tapon, Gaptamon, Bambu and Teptep Primary that have all closed, affecting the children’s education in this remote LLG (local level government).
The teachers fled in fear of their lives when the gang’s reign spread from upper Nankin down to lower Nankin Valley.
They will remain closed until we see it is safe to reopen these schools.
John Ura
He said apart from this, education in the province had seen a generally quiet year so far except for minor disruptions during the General Election 2022.
Ura is appealing to candidates and supporters in Madang to take care of school facilities at this time.
We had reports of other provinces destroying school properties but I appeal to communities and parents especially, to take ownership and look after school properties.
Election comes and goes while teaching and learning will continue.
Damaging school properties will only affect education in the province and disadvantage your children’s future.
Besides, election is not conducted by the Education Department. It is a national activity with its own institution and there are processes to follow to sort any election related grievances peacefully.
Ura
The Hetwara gang’s criminal activities have caused fear in the area.
