Lecturer and sons to stand trial for murder

A Committal Court has ruled that there is enough evidence for a lecturer and his two (2) sons to be tried in the National Court for attempted murder.

Magistrate Danny Wakikura at the Waigani Committal Court yesterday said there was evidence that John Arabel, 52, Deutron Arbel, 22, and Levi Arabel, 25, from Sinasina in Chimbu, were at the scene of the offense.

Wakikura said there is evidence that the victim was admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Port Moresby General Hospital.

He advised the Arabels that before the trial, they would be given the opportunity to give their declaration statements on the case and the charge against them.

The matter is adjourned to September 26 for the declaration statement.

Police allege that between 7pm and 8pm on January 1 this year, the three men had been drinking alcohol at Fort Banner, the University of Papua New Guinea’s staff residential area.

Security guard Cletus Wangi Timus had ridden his motorbike past the place where the Arabels were.

It is alleged that John, Duetron and Levi then attacked Timus with a knife and a metal bar causing him to fall off his bike. Timus sustained serious head injuries as a result of the fall and was admitted to the Port Moresby General Hospital ICU.
