The Papua New Guinea Teachers Association (PNGTA) has been asked to draft a bill for Parliament’s approval to become an Act of Parliament.
Morobe Governor Luther Wenge, when declaring the week-long PNGTA 16th triennial congress to reform, restore and modernise the organisation, said it was important that their by-laws became an Act.
PNGTA is an institution that represents more than 76,000 teachers in the country.
Teachers have their constitution to govern them but it is best to make these by-laws become an Act that will govern the organisation.
Luther Wenge
Wenge instructed PNGTA to draft a bill to Parliament which he would lobby to have it passed.
Once this bill is drafted and brought before me, I will make sure that it is introduced before the Parliament to have it approved and become an Act of Parliament just like the Education Act and others.
Wenge
Wenge, who is also the provincial education minister, said he would make the tabling of the Act a priority.
PNGTA national president Aita Sanangkepe said the institution had been in the country for 51 years and there had been no amendments made to its constitution since.
Now there is a need for us to repeal and amend the Constitution, and that is the purpose of this week-long meeting.
Aita Sanangkepe
Present at the meeting were 65 representatives from all four regions of the country and the national PNGTA council members.
