Grade Eight students of Nangananga Primary School in the Raluana local level government, Kokopo, East New Britain, are sitting their examinations with supervision from parents, leaders and teachers.
The school had been closed for the last three weeks following fights between two wards, Vunaulul and Livuan, which also led to the killing of a man and damaging of properties.
The decision to close the school came after an agreement made by all senior community heads and was supported by the people.
Livuan ward committee member Stanis Maidang told The National the decision to allow the Grade Eight students to sit their exams came after an assurance from the provincial education division and the Raluana LLG board.
Maidang said their only concern was to see the students sit their exams as it was a requirement by the Education Department.
Our concern was mainly on the Grade Eight students.
We’re thankful to the education adviser and those from the LLG for giving us the assurance to only allow our grade eight students to sit their exams.
That is important. After they complete their exams, we can decide whether we will resume classes for the other lower grades or they will be cancelled, but it all depends on the adviser.
We will act on what he says.
Mr Maidang.
