A man was shot dead and a boy injured during a fight on Saturday between youths from Vunaulul and Livuan wards in Raluan, Kokopo, East New Britain.
The incident occurred at around 4.30pm, where youths from Vunaulul tried to burn the Nangananga Primary School.
They were stopped by those from the Livuan ward. They retaliated by throwing stones at the school buildings.
Police in Kokopo were informed by The National about the incident at 5.24pm. But no officer turned up to stop the fight.
The man died on the spot while the boy was taken to the Nonga General Hospital in Rabaul.
Benjamin Wartoto, the brother of the deceased, told The National that doctors said the body would be kept at the morgue until police completed their investigation.
Livuan ward councillor Elizabeth Lucas urged the youths not to resort to retaliation, but to let police deal with the case.
The case was reported at the Kokopo Police Station yesterday.
Attempts to get a comment from the provincial police commander were unsuccessful.
