The teachers at Paglum Adventist Secondary School in Mt Hagen recently had an in-service session about the new education curriculum.
The purpose of the in-service is to introduce the teachers to the new education curriculum which will be rolled out to schools throughout the country in 2023.
The current curriculum used by schools in Papua New Guinea, the Outcome Based Curriculum (OBE) will be replaced with the Standard Based Curriculum (SBC).
The new curriculum was introduced in a weeklong training that was run by the Western Highlands department of education, which saw principals and department heads of schools in the province in attendance.
Some provinces have run the SBC system within their schools but as for Western Highlands, most of the schools have yet to implement the system and agreed to start next year.
The in-service training was facilitated by the deputy principal, Sense Vitus. He basically trained the staff on how to work on their lesson plans and work within the SBC.
Mr Vitus stressed on the importance of the SBC in-service training to the teachers and urged for their total commitment to its roll out next year.
This is very important as every teacher must attend and commit to use the right SBC techniques and every learning experience, starting 2023 in the classroom, must be based on that.
The SBC is student-focused whereas the OBE curriculum is outcome-based so the good thing about it is that the teachers will interact more with the students.
Mr Vitus
Almost 30 teachers attended the program and they were given SBC materials and teachers’ guides in preparation for next year. One of the teachers that took part in the in- service session was Manuel Samuel, a grade 11 ICT teacher, who expressed his view to the paper.
The training is very important to us teachers as some of the teachers are used to the old curriculum, the one we are using now. So, this is basically an introduction into how to change and adapt to the new one so the training has been very helpful for us.
