Over 200 bricks were made by inmates.
Sergeant Torenga who is in charge of the project said this during an announcement at Buimo jail in Lae recently.
Brick making is a new project carried out under the rehabilitation program in which the institution wants to give life skills training to the inmates so that when they finish serving their sentence and return to their communities and villages they can be able to use the skills learnt to help sustain their lives.
By making their own bricks they can build houses to sell or to make money.
Sgt Torenga
He said there are 11 inmates who are helping make bricks and as the project continues they will engage more to take part in the project.
The inmates who took part in the life skills training are pleased because they have learnt a new skill.
An inmate said that brick making is something he never knew of and commended the institution for introducing the project.
Some of us did not go to school, so with this new skill I know it will help us to contribute meaningfully back in the community.
Pius Moi, inmate
Sgt Torenga said for inmates who finished serving their time and returned home the institution will gift them the brick mold which they will take with them.
This is because they can get the skills but without proper equipment the skills will be put to waste.
Sgt Torenga
He said the bricks that were made by the inmates will be brought to the University of Technology for testing to see the strength and quality.
Sgt Torenga said if the result of the bricks comes out fine and is good to be used and sell the university will issue a certificate to certify that the bricks made by Buimo jail are the same as other known brick making companies.
The project was initiated by the University of Technology Engineering Department to help give a life skills training to inmates.
