A University of Goroka (UOG) student, who was assaulted during an after-exam celebration, has died at the Goroka General Hospital on Sunday, Vice Chancellor Dr Teng Waninga has confirmed.

The deceased, identified as Vianny Guken, was a third year student undertaking bachelor arts in education.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning from where he was rushed to the Goroka General hospital and died later that day due to loss of blood.

Mr Waninga said his friends, believed to be the Sepik students, in retaliation wounded a male student from East New Britain province who is now recovering in the main hospital from the injuries sustained.

With the help of the community and police, we contained the violence.

There was no fighting in the campus. What happened was an isolated case.

Meanwhile, the school is arranging for the TESAS students to fly to their respective home provinces with priority given to the East Sepik and East New Britain students, Dr Waninga said.

Many students who have access to road transport have left the university campus.
