The Mendi School of Nursing in Southern Highlands, will undergo rehabilitation at a cost of K7 million, Mendi-Munihu MP Raphael Tonpi says.
Tonpi said he had secured the funding to rebuild the only tertiary institution the district had near Mendi town that trained the province’s nurses.
He said the institution’s infrastructure had been damaged by the 2017 earthquake and posed a risk for lecturers and students.
A company will be engaged to tear down the old buildings and replace with new ones, it must look like a tertiary institution.
The biggest problem we have in Mendi town is people’s attitude to destroy services that took years to be established and it is time Councillors, local level government presidents as well as church and community leaders educate our people.
Mr Tonpi
He said education and health were two of the priority areas for the district development authority (DDA) and rundown and closed health facilities would be revived and improved to absorb nursing officers that graduated each year.
Tonpi said schools in the district would receive funding to improve their infrastructure however, many young people were not attending schools which needed to be rectified.
