15,000 teachers expected to be put off payroll

More than 15,000 teachers are expected to be put off payroll come May 5, according to the Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra.

Auto-suspension or automated suspension happens when the system (ALESCO payroll) suspends teachers when their resumption of duty summary sheets (RoDSS) is not registered in the system. This is a normal process that falls around this time of the year.

After suspension, the affected teachers will be restored on payroll after receipts of copies of their RoDSS by provincial education advisors.

Dr Kombra

Dr Kombra has advised that the auto-suspension for teachers on payroll will take effect on May 5 and that will affect a total of 15,748 teachers throughout the country.

He said the auto suspension was supposed to happen on pay number seven.

This should have happened on pay date April 7 but given a series of issues with the Education IT (Information Technology) network and the relocation of the Department headquarters, the data entry of remaining RoDSS on hand is now affected thus has been deferred by two pay dates to pay#9 which is on May 5.

The Teaching Service Commission chairman, Samson Wangihomie is calling on all teachers who wanted to teach this year to fill out the RoDSS.

All teachers must take up appointments. Those denied tenure positions must still take up appointments and later appeal. This is so that all of them are maintained on payroll.

Wangihomie

Last year’s auto-suspension saw less than that, where around 10 000 teachers were put off pay.
