Koki Primary gets dental care

A student getting his teeth checked

Koki Primary School in Port Moresby is the first school amongst six other schools in the city, chosen this year to have the YWAM Dental Trailer stationed at their school to help the students with their oral health and hygiene.

This follows an agreement signed between the National Capital District Commission, NCD Education Services, NCD Provincial Health Authority and the YWAM Medical Ships Australia and Papua New Guinea last week.

Over these next couple of weeks, our teams will be screening and treating some of the students and there will also be the opportunity to have oral care and all the other health care teachings in all the classes in all the schools.

YWAM Medical Ships Australia and Papua New Guinea public relations manager Anna Scott said the dental trailer will be stationed at Koki Primary School for the next eight days to educate the teachers and students on the importance of oral hygiene, and to also do dental check-ups for all students in the school.

We have four dentists with us, and how it works is that we just starting with all the students now, but there’s screening, so we’ve got two dentists outside the trailer and two inside and they check all the students to see how their teeth are and if they need dental care, then they are directed to the trailer and they get the work done right here, this week.

The care that we are doing is extractions, filling of cavities and any restorations.

After this the team will take a week off to restock before visiting Kila Kila Secondary School where they will be stationed for two weeks.
