Chinese Government Scholarships

In accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Educational Cooperation between the Government of People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Chinese Government provides scholarships for Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral Programs for eligible PNG candidates to study in China for the academic year 2024/2025.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for the Master’s or Doctoral Programs must be:

  • a PNG Citizen and in good health;
  • under the age of 35 for Master’s Programs, under the age of 40 for Doctoral Programs;
  • have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, and;
  • have release letter from employer if employed.

Applicants for the Bachelor’s Program must be:

  • a PNG Citizen and in good health;
  • under the age of 25, and;
  • have a Grade 12 Higher School Certificate with good academic performance of 2.5 GPA or above.

Main Requirements

Applicants are required to submit certified photocopies or relevant mandatory application documents listed below:

  • Printed Online Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship after online application;
  • Copy of Passport Home Page: Applicants shall submit a clear scanned copy of his/her ordinary passport with validity later than March 1st, 2025;
  • Notarized Upper Secondary School Certificates (Grade 12) with Transcripts (for Bachelor’s programs), notarized Bachelor’s Degree Certificate with Transcripts (for Master’s programs), notarized Master’s Degree Certificate with Transcripts (for Doctoral programs);
  • Pre-Admission Documents. All applicants must provide a pre-admission document issued by the universities applying. These include a pre-admission notice issued by the international students admission department or invitation letter from the schools or professors;
  • A Study Plan or Research Proposal in Chinese or English (A minimum of 200 words for undergraduates, 800 words for postgraduates);
  • Application for Master’s or Doctoral programs must submit two (2) letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors;
  • A photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form completed in English and from a recognized clinic. (The physical examinations should cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital or sealed photographs of the applicants are invalid. Please select the appropriate time to physical examinations as the results are only valid for six (6) months);
  • Non-criminal record report (Police Clearance) issued within six (6) months prior to the submission date of the application;
  • HSK Certificate (for Bachelor’s programs);
  • Applicants under the age of eighteen (18) should submit the valid documents of their legal guardians in China;
  • A Character Reference Letter from a Parish Priest/Pastor/Church Elder (with valid contact number);
  • Birth Certificate, NID card, Driver’s License.

Full application must be submitted in order of preferences listed above.

Priority field of study advised by DHERST:

The priority areas of study include: sciences, technology, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, education, history, liberal arts and philosophy. (DHERST advises not to apply for programs not listed above).

Specific Instructions to Apply Online

Visit the CSC Study in China website and click ‘Scholarship Application for Students‘ at https://www.campuschina.org. Register an account through [CREATE AN ACCOUNT] and login with your account. The ‘Program Category’ is: Type A and the Agency Number is: 5981.

Completed Online Application Forms must be downloaded and printed out a copy including all the required documents listed to be sent to:

Application Deadline

The applications should reach the office no later than Friday, 9th February, 2024. All applicants must apply online and submit two (2) hard copies of application form. Failure to apply online will automatically disqualify your application.

Faxed and emailed applications will not be accepted.

Please take note of the following important points

Applicants are advised to take heed of the few amendments to the scholarship program before submitting your applications:

  1. The Bachelor’s program is a full Chinese language study program;
  2. The scholarship package for 2024 does not include domestic and international travel expenses (going and returning tickets);
  3. Please contact the universities you are applying to to get a pre-admission notice prior to submitting your online application;
  4. DHERST advises applicants not to apply for programs that are not specified under the priority areas;
  5. If you do not receive any response from DHERST or the Chinese Embassy in PNG after the 20th of April, 2024, then please consider your application as being unsuccessful.
  6. Check your email frequently for updates, the universities will contact you via email.
