Last Friday, before midday, Gwaibo Nina and relative Roger Moyoni, were left with only six bags of garden produce from 143 in total they packed to raise school fee funds.
This fundraising is not only for me, I’m taking the lead. Three other students back home will benefit from this to pay their tuition fees as well
Gwaibo told Post-Courier
They are from Bigauruka village in Rigo District of Central Province, roughly a two-hour drive out of Port Moresby.
Gwaibo had just completed his grade 12 at Kwikila Secondary, a local school, and scored himself a placement at the International Training Institute (ITI) for a two-year diploma program.
His story was reported in Post-Courier, last Tuesday on his initiative to sell garden produce in a bag each for K100 in the coming days.
The funds raised would go towards his tuition fees.
This awareness reached many residents who were looking forward to assist Gwaibo.
The 23-year-old will be studying for a Diploma in Business Accounting and is looking forward to it, but this pleasing news also brought with it a huge burden of raising money to pay for his fees.
Last Thursday Gwaibo was assisted by Roger and two other youths to bring in 143 bags of garden produce organised by their village community.
Their sales in the city was facilitated by a relative who is a medical doctor at Port Moresby General Hospital.
After doctor agreed to help with the fundraising, the next day on Monday we sent word around to the village and they came with food from their gardens.
We sold everything yesterday, today (Friday) and we returned again with the last 10 bags to go. I want to thank everyone who supported.
Funds collected will be shared equally among the four of us. My three other friends are in the village who were also selected to ITI.
