254,000 Students Across Papua New Guinea to Sit for National Examinations

A total of 254,000 students from Grades 8, 10, and 12 in Papua New Guinea will sit for their National Examinations starting next week, according to the Department of Education.

Examination Schedule

  • Grade 10: October 6–10, 2025 (87,500 students from 520 high and secondary schools)
  • Grade 12: October 13–17, 2025 (36,500 students from 250 secondary schools, including six National Schools of Excellence)
  • Grade 8: October 20–23, 2025 (130,000 students from 3,400 primary schools)

Secretary for Education Dr. Uke Kombra confirmed that all Grade 10 examination papers have been distributed nationwide, with Grade 12 and Grade 8 materials to follow.

Examination Marking

  • Grade 10: Marking begins in the National Capital District immediately after the first exam. Answer sheets will then be dispatched to all provinces for consistent marking.
  • Grade 12: Marking will be conducted in Port Moresby from October 19–30.
  • Grade 8: Marking will take place in respective provinces after exams conclude.

Security and Integrity of Exams

The Department of Education is working with the Enga Provincial Government and security personnel to ensure examinations are not disrupted despite ongoing violence in the region.

Dr. Kombra issued a stern warning against malpractice, stressing that cheating has been eliminated in national exams. Serious penalties will apply for any misconduct, including:

  • Non-certification for students
  • Teacher termination for involvement in malpractice
  • School bans of at least three years
