USP Launches Center for Sustainable Futures to Tackle Climate Change in the Pacific

SUVA, FIJI — The University of the South Pacific (USP) has launched the Center for Sustainable Futures (CSF), a new research hub dedicated to advancing sustainable development and climate change solutions across the Pacific region.

The Center brings together some of USP’s key research divisions, including the Pacific Center for Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD), Institute of Marine Resources (IMR), Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS), and the Discipline of Marine Studies. This integration is designed to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and produce practical, locally relevant responses to the region’s environmental and social challenges.

Driving Regional Climate Research

USP said the new Center will serve as a focal point for research, education, and innovation in sustainability and climate adaptation. The initiative aims to bridge scientific, social, and policy perspectives to help Pacific Island nations address rising sea levels, coastal erosion, biodiversity loss, and other climate-related risks.

According to USP alumna and researcher Noella Dorevella, who is currently involved in the Pacific Ocean and Climate Crisis Assessment (POCCA) project under the Center, CSF provides an opportunity for researchers and students to collaborate on impactful projects that make a real difference in their communities.

It’s about bringing together experts from environmental science, economics, sociology, and urban planning to create meaningful solutions for the Pacific. Students who join these programs can gain valuable skills and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Empowering Students and Communities

The Center also aims to inspire the next generation of Pacific researchers and leaders by offering new academic and training pathways. Students are encouraged to apply for upcoming programs under the CSF to gain hands-on experience in sustainability, environmental policy, and climate science.

This is an incredible opportunity for students who want to work on real-world challenges and collaborate with others passionate about sustainability.

Strengthening the Pacific’s Climate Voice

The establishment of the CSF underscores USP’s commitment to regional cooperation and innovation at a time when Pacific nations are facing unprecedented environmental pressures. The Center’s interdisciplinary approach is expected to enhance research output, inform government policy, and support communities adapting to the effects of climate change.

As Pacific countries continue to advocate for stronger global climate action, the Center for Sustainable Futures is set to play a vital role in amplifying Pacific voices and promoting solutions that are both scientifically sound and culturally grounded.
