GOROKA, Eastern Highlands — The University of Goroka (UOG) has been suspended indefinitely after violent clashes erupted between students and local residents over the weekend, according to NBC News.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. Teng Waninga said the suspension was made in consultation with the University Council and Academic Board, emphasizing that the decision was in the best interest of student safety and campus stability.
How the Violence Started
Reports indicate that the unrest began around 6 p.m. on Saturday when a student was allegedly harassed and assaulted by a group of intoxicated individuals while heading to an end-of-year function. The student later returned with friends, and the confrontation quickly escalated.
The situation worsened on Sunday when local residents regrouped and attacked the university, damaging properties, including several vehicles and campus facilities.
Casualties and Injuries
Authorities have confirmed 57 casualties — 47 students, three local residents, and one police officer.
Dr. Shirley ToMangana of Goroka Hospital said four patients remain under medical observation, with one undergoing emergency surgery for severe head injuries.
