Scholarships for Health & Education sector

Scholarships will be delivered by Scholarships PNG, on behalf of AusAID, in partnership with identified institutions.

The initiative reflects the strategy to provide training in health and other priority areas identified by the PNG Government and development partners while strengthening its education and training institutions.

Scholarships will be targeted to young individuals from rural areas in PNG who:

  • are committed to gaining qualifications in midwifery, nursing, community health work and secondary education;
  • will return to work in their professional capacity to support PNG increase its health and education workforces, particularly in rural areas; and
  • Will contribute to the social and economic development of PNG.
  • Females are strongly encouraged to apply.

What can I study?

Scholarships are available at partner institutions for the following approved programs:

  • Bachelor of Midwifery;
  • Bachelor of Nursing;
  • Diploma of Nursing;
  • Community Health Worker Certificate; and
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary).

Where can I study?

Scholarships will be delivered by Scholarships PNG in partnership with the following PNG education and training institutions:

  • Bachelor of Midwifery at University of PNG, Pacific Adventist University, Lutheran School of Nursing, University of Goroka and St. Mary’s School of Nursing.
  • Bachelor of Nursing at Pacific Adventist University.
  • Diploma of Nursing at University of PNG, Lutheran School of Nursing, Goroka School of Nursing, St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Mendi School of Nursing, St. Barnabas School of Nursing, Lae School of Nursing and Nazarene School of Nursing.
  • Community Health Worker Certificate at St. Gerard’s, Kapuna, Raihu, Rumginae, Lemakot, Salamo, Tinsley, St. Margaret’s, Braun, Kumin, Onamuga and Gaubin CHW Training Schools.
  • Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Pacific Adventist University and University of Goroka

What is the length of scholarships?

The scholarships are offered for the minimum period that the individual could be expected to complete the approved program of study. That is, four years for Bachelor of Midwifery, Nursing and Education (Secondary) programs, three years for Diploma of Nursing programs, two years for Community Health Worker Certificates and one year for Bachelor of Midwifery programs.

What are the scholarship conditions?

Applicants who are offered a scholarship will be asked to sign an undertaking declaring that they will comply with the conditions of that scholarship. Conditions include:

  • commencing the scholarship award in the academic year for which it is offered;
  • completing the full study program within the duration of the scholarship;
  • undertaking the approved program of study at the specified institution for which the scholarship is offered without change (unless written approval is provided by AusAID);
  • complying with the regulations of the education institution and meeting all academic requirements as set out by the institution and AusAID, and;
  • disclosing any behavior or illegal activity undertaken prior to accepting the offer of the scholarship which, in AusAID’s opinion, would have resulted in the application being rejected had it been disclosed.

Do I get financial assistance while studying?

Scholarship entitlements may vary between institutions depending on the approved program of study.

Generally, entitlements cover return travel to the institution of study, academic and other compulsory fees and a living allowance paid fortnightly.
