Motu Koita Assembly Pays K1.5m for UPNG Study Fees

The Motu Koita Assembly (MKA) yesterday paid K1.5 million to the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) to cover school fees for its students at various schools in the city.

MKA chairman Miria Ikupu, when presenting the cheque, said the assembly viewed the education of its students seriously and would continue to support them at all levels of their education.

He said under his leadership, MKA embarked on the capital development initiative two years ago, but at that time it covered only the primary level.

This year, the scheme will also cover tertiary institutions, including universities. Sixty five Motu Koitabuans at UPNG will benefit from this exercise where 50 percent of their fees will be covered.

Mr Ikupu said Motu Koitabuans owned the land on which Port Moresby stood.

We have given so much for this city’s development, yet we are spectators on our own land.

This is why I have embarked on human capital development as this is the only secure thing for us. By educating our people will mean prosperity for us.

Ikupu

Mr Ikupu said the people of Motu Koita must now realise that their destiny is in education.

By having educated Motu Koita people, we will prosper and be competitive. Education is the key.

Motu Koita Students Association patron and Executive Dean of the School of Natural and Physical Sciences, Professor Frank Griffin, applauded the initiative and challenged students to produce results worthy of the MKA’s support.
