Students from Western Highlands province attending the Divine Word University in Madang have thanked their provincial government by cleaning the Mt Hagen City.
The students took the all day on Tuesday (July 4) walked all the streets picking rubbish as a token of appreciation shown to governor Wai Rapa and the Provincial administration for offsetting their schools fees with K5 million this year.
A total of 2500 tertiary students in the province have received K2000 each early this year from the school fee assistance program that governor Rapa has initiated.
Student leader Mr Wingti Raima said that the purpose for them to clean the Mt Hagen City was a way of thanking Governor Rapa.
We admire the leadership of the governor because he has done something great by paying our school fees.

Mr Raima, a fourth year business and accounting student, said some of them wouldn’t make it to tertiary institutions if the provincial government didn’t chip in.
Many of us come from poor background and we believe we wouldn’t make it if the provincial government didn’t support us.
Raima said adding that they have nothing to give back to the provincial government but thanking them with the cleaning work.
He said Mt Hagen City is changing unlike before.
We can see that our city is changing to next level. Thus, we are so proud and complement the city’s current state by voluntarily cleaning little rubbish.
