Five (5) students with special needs are among 144 students from the Lae’s FODE Community College that sat for their grade 12 examinations.
These are students whom three are with Hearing Impairment whilst two are with Physical disability.
The department through the FODE headquarter has included inclusive learning into the system through Fode education.
This is a stepping stone to take students into the program and to implement the national government policy to take back PNG.
This year the Lae community College took 144 grade 12 students which five are with special needs so this is the practical part of the inclusive system.

Morobe Inclusive Resource Centre officer Leah Kisi was present to assist the five students in their examination this week.
She said the MIRC provides services for persons living with disability with much focus now on ages six to sixteen years of children.
We also provide support service to the mainstream schools that have enrolled our students with disabilities.
There are different types of disabilities however according to our statistics we have high data of children living with Hearing impaired within Lae City.
Lae community College is one of the school’s that we provide support service to come out and interpret them in their work.

Ms Kisi said there is a big need for more teachers in inclusive learning and has called on the provincial government to look into opening up positions to bring in more teachers for special needs.
Yesterday four of the students with special needs sat for their grade 12 History examination paper with assistance from Ms Kisi through sign language.
Exams will continue on till Friday to conclude with Advance and General Mathematics.
