For the first time in the history of Papua New Guinea’s higher education selection process, non-school leavers have been selected based on the same academic merit criteria as Grade 12 school leavers. This is a significant achievement in ensuring fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all students, regardless of when they completed their education.
The following are the key statistics for the 2025 academic year selection outcomes:
- Number of Grade 12 School Leaver Applicants: 30,640
- Number of Non-School Leaver Applicants: 2,268
- Total Secondary Schools with Nomination Lists: 235
- Total Programmes Available for 2025 Academic Year: 314
Of the 30,640 Grade 12 school leaver applicants, 10,203 have successfully secured placements in higher education institutions. Similarly, out of 2,268 non-school leaver applicants, 1,299 had successfully secured placements in higher education institutions for the 2025 academic year. Students whose applications did not secure a placement will have their data moved to the National Admissions Pool for possible consideration from institutions which have yet to meet program quota.
This brings the total number of student applications in the national admission pool to 21,406, who may be selected by individual institutions per program requirement and program yield. These students will receive offers of admission and will be asked to confirm their acceptance to study at their chosen institutions.
The total number of available spaces for the 2025 academic year across all Higher Education Institutions was 23,389:
- For Non-School Leavers, the total available spaces were 8,303.
- For School Leavers, the total available spaces were 15,086.
- The total number of School Leavers and Non-School Leavers selected on December 18, 2024 was 11,502.
This selection process reflects a commitment of Marape-Rosso Government to ensuring that all students, whether school leavers or non-school leavers, are given a fair opportunity based on their academic achievements. It also emphasizes the importance of merit-based selection in shaping a brighter future for Papua New Guinea’s young minds.
I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all successful applicants and wish them the very best in their studies as they embark on their academic journeys. To those who were not successful this year, I encourage you to continue improving your academic performance and apply again next year. Remember, your name and student number are already in the system, and there is always another opportunity for growth and achievement.
This transparent and efficient process would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (DHERST), particularly the Deputy Secretary and her team in the Research and Innovation Division, as well as our colleagues in the PCG Academic. I extend my deepest thanks to all involved for their unwavering commitment to this groundbreaking achievement.
As we continue our journey towards progress, it is vital to acknowledge that the Marape-Rosso Government recognizes the power of education as the cornerstone of our nation’s development. Education is the key that unlocks potential, shapes our future, and equips individuals with the tools to succeed and contribute meaningfully to society.
In this rapidly changing world, the importance of education cannot be overstated. It is through education that we empower our youth to dream big, innovate, and lead with confidence. By fostering critical thinking, creativity, and resilience, we prepare them to meet the challenges of the 21st century with courage and competence.
The Marape-Rosso Government remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing access to quality education, bridging the digital divide, and ensuring that every child, regardless of
their background, has the opportunity to excel. Through targeted investments in infrastructure, lecturer training, and technology, we are creating an education system that is inclusive, dynamic, and future-focused.
Together, as a nation, we will continue to prioritize education as the foundation of sustainable growth and social transformation, ensuring that Papua New Guinea reaches its fullest potential. Let us unite in this mission and build a brighter, more prosperous future for generations to come.
It is with great pride that I announce the implementation of new initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality and accessibility of education across Papua New Guinea. By investing in our
educational systems, we are not only preparing our youth for the challenges of tomorrow but also ensuring the continued growth and prosperity of our nation.
In line with this vision, I am further enhancing the digitization of DHERST and the Higher Education Sector. These advancements will streamline operations, improve efficiency, and provide greater access to education for students across the country, paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative future.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.
Winston Churchill
Let this be a guiding principle as we strive to overcome the challenges that come with reforming and advancing education. With resilience and determination, we are paving the way for a brighter future.
We must remember the timeless words of Eleanor Roosevelt: ‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.’ With the unwavering support of the Marape-Rosso Government, coupled with our collective effort and unity, we are poised to transform our educational landscape.
Our mission is clear: to equip our youth with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive in the 21st century. By fostering innovation, embracing digital transformation, and
ensuring equal access to quality education, we are not only building a brighter future for our young people but also laying a strong foundation for the sustainable growth and development of Papua New Guinea. Together, we can turn dreams into reality and shape a prosperous future for all.
I encourage all stakeholders, educators, students, and parents, to continue working together with unwavering dedication. Let us unite in our commitment to creating a sustainable, vibrant educational system that will serve our children and generations to come.
As we approach the Festive season, I wish all students and their families a blessed and joyous Christmas. May this season of giving and reflection bring warmth, happiness, and unity
to every home. Let us also look to the New Year with renewed hope, as it brings fresh opportunities, prosperity, and continued progress for our nation and people.
Together, we continue to build a brighter future for all, guided by the belief that ‘The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams’. Let us dream boldly, work tirelessly, and remain united in our vision for a better Papua New Guinea. Together, we will achieve our dreams, overcome challenges, and create a country where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. May this season inspire us to be a light for others, and may the New Year mark the beginning of even greater accomplishments.
May God bless you all, and may God bless Papua New Guinea!
Sincerely,
