Students at the University of Goroka are concerned about the handling of their affairs by the university administration.

Foremost is the university’s refusal to allow the students to run a representative council as in past years.

The university used to allow them to run a student council in campus to look after their affairs and represent their views on administrative matters.

Last year, student leaders staged a strike and boycott. They were blacklisted and not allowed to wear the traditional green gown during the graduation day.

The students, speaking on condition of anonymity, say that without a council, they have no say in how the university administration handled their welfare and academic requirements.

Attempts to get comments yesterday from university vice chancellor Dr Gairo Onagi were unsuccessful.

He was said to be attending to some “urgent matters”.

The students believe that with no one to represent their views, the administration decides unilaterally on what is good for them.

A lecturer at another university whose son attends the Goroka institution says it is being run like a vocational or primary school.

The lecturer, speaking on conditions of anonymity, say poor management decisions on students and the academic staff have forced some senior lecturers to leave.
