Technical Training in Demand: Australia Pacific Technical College Celebrates 5 Years of Empowering PNG

Australian High Commissioner Ian Kermish

The resource boom in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is driving unprecedented job growth, creating a surge in demand for skilled workers and technical training. Australian High Commissioner Ian Kermish highlighted this during the fifth anniversary celebration of the Australia Pacific Technical College (APTC) in Port Moresby, where he unveiled a commemorative plaque.

APTC: Bridging the Skills Gap in PNG

The APTC, a joint initiative by the PNG and Australian governments, is addressing this demand by equipping locals with world-class technical training. Since its inception, the college has empowered individuals to fill critical roles in industries fueled by PNG’s resource boom.

By the end of the year, APTC will have graduated 1,101 students under Australian sponsorship and an additional 450 students through industry partnerships. These graduates are earning Australian-recognized qualifications in high-demand fields such as:

  • Construction
  • Electrical
  • Engineering
  • Automotive
  • Manufacturing
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Health and Community Services

Breaking Gender Barriers Through Education

One of APTC’s standout achievements is its commitment to inclusivity. The college’s scholarships, available to students from 13 Pacific Island nations including PNG, Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Nauru, are breaking down gender stereotypes.

PNG women are enrolling in traditionally male-dominated trades, while PNG men are proudly pursuing courses like hairdressing to enhance their barbering skills. This inclusive approach ensures diverse opportunities for all, empowering communities across the region.

A Collaborative Effort for Success

High Commissioner Kermish praised the contributions of APTC’s training partners, including:

  • Port Moresby Technical College
  • Ok Tedi Mining Ltd
  • Hastings Deering
  • Ela Motors
  • New Britain Oil Palm

These partnerships have been instrumental in delivering quality education and ensuring graduates are job-ready.

Why Technical Training Matters

As PNG’s economy continues to grow, the need for skilled professionals is more critical than ever. APTC’s programs are tailored to meet industry demands, providing graduates with the skills and certifications needed to thrive in competitive job markets.
