Grade 8 Exams to Start on Monday, Some Schools Could Face Delays

Port Moresby, PNG — The Papua New Guinea Department of Education has confirmed a revised examination schedule for the 2025 Grade 8 national exams. While the exams are slated to begin on Monday, 20 October, some schools may need to shift specific dates due to logistical delays in distributing exam materials, according to NBC.

Delay Caused by Delivery Disruptions

According to Education Secretary Dr. Uke Kombra, the adjustments to the exam timeline result from delays in transporting exam papers to several provinces. Although all materials have been dispatched via Air Niugini Cargo, flight disruptions and rescheduling are affecting on-time delivery.

Dr. Kombra emphasized that minor adjustments to the examination schedule will be permitted where necessary. However, any changes beyond the 24 October completion target must first receive approval from the central Education Department.

Exam Timeline & Oversight

  • Start date: Monday, 20 October 2025.
  • Expected completion: Friday, 24 October 2025.
  • Schools facing delays are urged to reschedule within that window, subject to departmental approval.

Dr. Kombra also reminded school administrations to securely store exam materials and ensure fair administration of all tests. Provincial Education Advisors and Inspectors have been tasked with maintaining communication channels with schools to manage any timeline shifts.

What This Means for Students & Schools

  • Some students may take their exams on slightly different days than originally planned.
  • Schools in remote or logistically challenged provinces are most likely to adjust dates.
  • The Department of Education aims to keep any disruptions minimal and within the 20–24 October window.
  • All proposed changes beyond 24 October will require the direct approval of Dr. Kombra’s office.

Looking Ahead

The Education Department thanked provinces, schools, and teachers for their cooperation and urged all stakeholders to remain flexible and communicative during this period.

As the exams approach, the Department expects all schools to adhere strictly to protocol, especially in areas of exam security and fairness. Given the unpredictable nature of flight schedules in PNG, the Department is prepared to issue further clarifications should additional delays arise.
