PNG Makes e-School Registration Mandatory by 2026 to Boost Education Quality

In a significant step toward achieving the PNG Education Transformation Vision 2075, the Department of Education in Papua New Guinea has announced that e-School Registration will become compulsory starting in 2026. This initiative aligns with the 2025 Education Theme, “Accessible Quality Education Pathways For All”, and the commitment to “Leave No Child Behind”. The move aims to enhance transparency, ensure compliance, and improve monitoring across all schools in the country.

Strengthening Education Through e-School Registration

Dr. Uke Kombra, Secretary for Education and Chairman of the Senior Education Officers Conference (SEOC), emphasized the importance of this policy in building a robust education system.

Our call to action is clear: strengthen e-registration, improve infrastructure, enhance teacher capacity, and engage communities to secure sustainable education pathways for all children in Papua New Guinea.

Dr. Kombra

He further explained that school registration is more than a bureaucratic requirement—it is a critical step to ensure quality education, accessibility, and proper progression through the education system. By making e-registration mandatory, the Department of Education aims to create a standardized and transparent process for approving and monitoring schools nationwide.

Achievements and Progress in e-School Registration

The implementation of e-School Registration has already shown promising results. According to Dr. Kombra, the initiative has led to:

  • Improved compliance with Department of Education standards.
  • Increased transparency in the approval process for schools.
  • Expanded access to education through the registration of new schools.

As of now, 13,508 schools are formally registered under Papua New Guinea’s national education system. This includes:

  • 8,368 pre-schools/elementary schools
  • 4,430 primary schools
  • 299 junior high schools
  • 205 secondary schools
  • 152 vocational training centers, and others.

These numbers reflect our progress and commitment to ensuring that every child in Papua New Guinea has access to a recognized and supportive learning pathway.

A Vision for the Future

The mandatory e-School Registration policy is a cornerstone of the PNG Education Transformation Vision 2075, which aims to transform education over the next 50 years. By leveraging digital tools and fostering community engagement, the Department of Education is working to ensure that no child is left behind in accessing quality education.

This initiative not only strengthens the education system but also supports Papua New Guinea’s broader goal of sustainable development through education. Schools, educators, and communities are encouraged to embrace this change to create a brighter future for the nation’s children.
