Mixed reactions have greeted the start of the academic year and the government’s implementation of its free fees policy.
Most schools in Lae have reported an influx of new students.
But most schools are giving priority to continuing students with access to classrooms and student materials.
Teachers said from among new students, they would prioritize those who genuinely transferred from other schools with transfer documents before deal with the others.
The teachers said most parents were not properly informed, resulting in heated verbal confrontations with teachers who are implementing their own compulsory requirements for project fees to be paid.
Each primary and secondary school has its own project fees, depending on need and location.
Because of the confusion on the free education policy, most schools are still sorting things out with parents and will officially start classes next week.
