Volunteers to Teach in Technical Schools

Volunteer training is vital to the human resources of Papua New Guinea and must be embraced at all levels of governance, a senior public servant said.

Chairman of the National Volunteer Service council under the Department of Community Development Wep Kanawi signed an agreement with Allied Career Training School (ACTS) director Towarpin Burso for two volunteer teachers to teach trade skills at a training school in Namatanai, New Ireland province.

“Recognizing the resource of volunteering to train young Papua New Guineans on trade skills will set a standard in the mechanical development arena that will boost the country’s progress in terms of human resource and technology development,” Burso said in Port Moresby.

He said the initiative of going rural “is timely as Papua New Guinea is developing at a faster rate than before”.

The volunteers will be sourced by the NVS and National Training Council at the end of this month to teach information technology and business-secretarial courses for two years at the school.</p>

Burso said as a tradesman by profession, his work had indicated there was a great need to train young people trade skills to benefit from opportunities the country’s booming development offered.

“Most skilled people are sourced from outside and it is very unfortunate that the few locals who are recruited do not possess the necessary skills and training and so they miss out on most opportunities,” he said.

He said New Ireland, as the host to one of the world’s largest gold mines, was occupied by workers from other areas when many locals with little or no trade skills missed out on job opportunities.

Burso said his institution aimed to help and support them find employment.

“We saw the need to establish a technical skills and trade-based institution to provide life skills to our young people. It is that important,” he said.

NVS acting director Ernest Ortega said NVS and ACTS would work together to strengthen the partnership.

ACTS gave a cheque of K36, 928 to NVS for allowance for the two volunteers.
NVS will provide K9, 000 to top up the agreed K45, 928 costs for the full two-year term.
Training classes will start next month.
