Today, The University of the South Pacific (USP) received another fantastic official announcement of its ranking in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by subject area of Social Sciences.

The ranking in the Social Sciences is further to the earlier announcement of the University’s achievement of global ranking in the 1001-1200 category of THE World University Rankings 2022 and 601-800 in the Subject area for Physical Sciences.

This year’s THE table for Social Sciences includes 870 universities, up from 791 last year. It highlights the universities leading across the following disciplines: communication and media studies, politics and international studies (including development studies), sociology and geography.

USP Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Pal Ahluwalia stated that the ranking reinforces the importance of the University as a regional institution.

This celebration of ranking most certainly is for our researchers, academics and students who are involved in ensuring that we advance knowledge and continue to be the premier University of the Pacific.

We will ensure to continue enhancing our system for our students, and we will make sure they continue to get the best education.

Professor Pal Ahluwalia

USP’s Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Jito Vanualailai, said the announcement by the THE indicates the University’s capability to deliver world-class education and conduct high-quality and impactful research in the social and physical sciences.

He said that it is an essential measure of academic excellence, and it is encouraging to note that USP has continued to excel from its time of existence.

Professor Vanualailai said that every Pacific Islander, alumni, staff and student should be proud of what their University has accomplished, now that it is ranked in the top 600 and 800 universities in the Social Sciences, and the Physical Sciences, respectively.

Acting Head of School of Law and Social Sciences (SoLaSS), Associate Professor Sandra Tarte, said she is thrilled with this achievement by USP.

It is very gratifying to receive such recognition for our research and teaching.

We have a very productive and high calibre team of academics here in the School of Law and Social Sciences. Our research is world-class and aims to have a particular impact on the countries and communities that make up our USP region.

Associate Professor Sandra Tarte

She said that this ranking is, she believes, evidence that we are doing just that.

I wish to acknowledge all the hard work that has gone into making this possible.
