USP’s Foundation programme prepares Peni for undergraduate studies

Students have time until today, 8 April to apply for The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) Pacific Technical and Further Education (Pacific TAFE) programmes.

The College of Foundation Studies offers Preliminary Arts, Preliminary Business and Preliminary Science programmes and Foundation Arts, Foundation Business and Foundation Science programmes. These programmes help prepare students for undergraduate studies.

Ratu Peni Torowale Junior, who studied the Preliminary Business and then the Foundation Business Programme said he was inclined to join the programme due to his interest in finance and described his journey as an educational one.

He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics and Finance.

As a school dropout and survivor of high school bullying, he stated that extracurricular activities greatly aided his mental health.

Peni said the Foundation programme served as a bridge to an undergraduate degree programme.

Studying this foundation course assisted me in obtaining the necessary qualifications and skills. This included general study skills like academic writing, time management, and independent research.

I got used to University-style teaching with lectures, tutorials, and seminar-style classes; therefore, I had an advantage over other students entering higher education straight from school.

Peni mentioned he chose to study at USP for its recognition as the premier institution for higher education in the South Pacific region.

As the premier institution in our region, they pride themselves on the quality of learning and teaching. In addition, they encourage self-development, open-mindedness, and cultural inclusivity through activities such as interschool debates, student support workshops, seminars, volunteer events, field trips, and so much more.
