UPNG lecturer and sons in court

A university lecturer and his three (3) sons charged with attempted murder of a security guard appeared before the Waigani Committal Court yesterday.

The victim, Cletus Wangi Timus, a guard, has been in a critical condition at Port Moresby General Hospital and remains in intubation with ventilator support and sedation since the incident on January 1.

Magistrate Danny Wakikura told John Arabel, 52, from Kohe village, Sinasina in Chimbu, and his sons Deutron Arabel, 22, Levi Arabel, 25 and Jelfred Mabira, 22, that the court had adjourned their case to August 15 for their submissions.

However, lecturer Arabel asked the court to set another date as his son Deutron would be sitting for his Grade 12 Written Expression examination on August 15.

Magistrate Wakikura then adjourned to August 18.

It is alleged that on January 1, between 7pm and 8pm, at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) staff residential area, Fort Banner, the four (4) defendants who were allegedly drunk attacked Timus.

It is alleged that Timus had ridden on his motorbike to where the four (4) were drinking when they attacked him with a knife and a metal bar which caused him to fall off the bike and sustained injuries to his head.

It is alleged that during the time of the attack, lecturer Arabel defended his sons.
