Higher Education acting secretary Dr Francis Hualupmomi says the government has allocated K39 million for Tertiary Education Study Assistance Scheme (TESAS) this year.

He said K36 million had so far been released which was used to settle the first semester of 2022 and the outstanding from last year.

However, the remaining K3 million was yet to be released by the Treasury Department.

Our additional request for further K40 million is not yet given by Treasury.

The delay in disbursement of funds is due to Treasury Department not releasing funds on time, the funds were supposed to be released before October.

Hualupmomi was responding to The National’s query about tertiary students not receiving their airfare refund on time.

He said all universities and higher education institutions recognized by the department would receive theirs soon.

Hualupmomi said DHERST usually issue tickets for all students under the scholarships through the appropriate airline services at the beginning and end of every year, however, the delay in funding had seen students meeting their own airfares.

He said those who paid for their own fares could claim refund.

It was understood that most students had been waiting for their refunds for almost one year and needed clarification from DHERST.
