A man has been arrested at Dugulaba village on Madang’s Manam Island in relation to the assault and rape of a female teacher, The National reports.
It is alleged that the man broke into the victim’s residence on October 12, while drunk and armed with a machete, and attacked the 23 year old victim. He escaped leaving the victim unconscious. The victim was later found and taken to the Bogia Health Center for treatment.
According to reports, the victim; a new graduate teacher had been teaching at Dugulaba Primary School for the last nine (9) months, and had been in a four (4) month relationship with the suspect. The pair has been separated during the attack.
A police team was deployed to the island last week and managed to arrest the suspect with the help of the village chief (kukurai) and ward Councillor.
