Remote school closes after attack

The Madarabit primary school in the Lassul-Baining LLG, Gazelle district, has closed for the year.

This follows the burning of the school hall and destruction other properties including classrooms by the Bainings.

The locals burnt down the hall and destroyed the classrooms by smashing louvre blades, breaking desks, cutting and tearing text books at around 11am on June 8.

The head teacher Mrs Theresia Kavanamur said a total of 70 students who had been enrolled will now have no school and some of them are transferring to the Open Bay Primary School.

It is not right; they are denying the rights of the children to be educated.

Mrs Kavanamur

The teachers have left the school on Monday after the school was closed and they will be offered new postings.

The school is located in the remotest part of ENB where there is no electricity and network coverage.

We were sacrificing and teaching in fear for the first two terms and they could not appreciate that.

Kavanamur

Most of the students are Bainings and the teachers have to travel in from the province to educate them.

Not many teachers like teaching at the school due to no electrification and the network coverage is poor.

We do not have sports in school and we do not ring the bell to marked different periods at school.

Mrs Kavanamur

Mrs Kavanamur said that the Bainings do not like noises and the school is not allowed to make noises. They have their own rules and the students and teachers have to abide by it.

The Education Department, Gazelle District and the police are working together to settled the issue and will find a solution to it.
