A nursing school in East Sepik has suspended classes for its first and second year students due to financial difficulties
According to The National, the Wewak School of Nursing’s (WSON) principal, Jorim Zira in a circular, stated that the school could not operate the school on student fees alone when there is an inflation in the country.
Zira said the issue was beyond the administration’s ability and school has not been receiving operational grants from respective government agencies. He said the school had been given provisional accreditation since 2021 by the nursing council but have not been receiving consistent operational funds.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Special Parliamentary Committee on Health Matters, Elias Kapavore, expressed disappointment over the suspension and called on the Papua New Guinea Nursing Council (PNGNC), Department of Higher Education, Research and Technology (DHERST), Department of Health (DOH) and the Boram School of Nursing (BSON) Administration to address the matter and allow the school to complete the academic year.
